How do I reach (Updated May 2017)

General information about booking tickets.

Government bus: Tickets cannot be booked in advance. Show up and buy the ticket at the bus.Leave the hostel about one hour earlier to secure a seat.

Trains: Tickets need to be booked in advance. Please look into the document “Indian Railways demystified” on how to book.

Private buses: Can be booked in advance and mostly available till last day.Hostel can help you book these.You can try to check prices/book these on Redbus.in

Places to Stay: In mountains, people host in their homes and these accomodation options are really cheap. You need to reach the city and ask around for such places. Check hostelworld/ tripadvisor for stay options as well.

When to Leave the hostel: Leaving the hostel 1 hour before your bus/train time is recommended. Bus station is 5-10 minutes on a tuktuk and train station is 15-20 mins.

Dharamsala/Mcleodganj

Public Bus: The only direct government bus leaves at 12:05 PM. Alternatively, take the bus from Amritsar to Pathankot (Every 5-10 minutes starting 5:30 AM takes 3 hours). From Pathankot, service to Dharamsala(around 4 hours) is about every 1-2 hours till 6 pm. Last bus from pathankot to dharamsala leaves at 9pm. Mcleodganj is 9 kms (30-40 mins) from Dharamsala. Tickets cannot be booked in advance. Leave hostel one hour before to secure a seat. Takes 7-8 hours.₹250

Private bus: The only private AC bus in the day leaves at 4:30 pm. Takes 5-6 hours and can be booked by the hostel. ₹700.

Train:Take the train to Pathankot(2-3 hours) and take the toy-train to Kangra from where you can change to a bus to Dharamsala. Takes 9-11 hours.

Places to Stay: Om Hotel/Sidhartha in Mcleod. Home Pizzeria/Day and night cafe(₹400) in Dharamkot. There is a homestay in Dharamkot near Heena cafe for ₹250 a night(2 people). Ask for Meena from cafe.

Places we find interesting: Tushita drop in meditation classes, Fresh Croissants from lama bakery dharamkot at 5am, Japanese restaurant for sushi day(tues/fri), Rogpa cafe for coffee, Tibet kitchen/hotel tibet for authentic tibetan food, Crepe Pancake Hut for borrittos and cakes. Dhabas on the main square for cheap unlimited Thali.

Delhi

Train: There are many trains from Amritsar to Delhi. This is a busy route so plan to book some days in advance or book a tatkal ticket. Check “Indian Railways demystified”.

Bus: There are lots of private buses from Amritsar to Delhi which can normally be booked on same day. Most of them leave in the night around 10pm and reach Delhi at 6-7 am. Ask hostel reception for booking tickets.

Airport: Direct buses to Delhi airport go from Jalandgar at 11 am and 11 pm. ₹1000.

Journey time: 6-10 hours on train(depending on train) and 7-8 hours on bus

Recommended Way: Book train in advance or night bus for spontaneous trip.

Leh

There is no direct transport to Leh. Either go to Srinagar or Manali.

Journey time: 15 hours to Manali/Srinagar. 2 day buses with night stopover from Manali/Srinagar to Leh.

Recommended Way: Look into how to reach Srinagar/Manali.

Srinagar

There is no direct transport to Srinagar. You need to take a bus/train from Amritsar to Jammu and a shared taxi/bus from Jammu to Srinagar.

Bus: Private deluxe buses leave at 6 AM and 10:15 PM for Jammu. Government buses run all day. Ask Reception for deluxe bus booking.

Train: Two trains (1:10 AM and 8:20 AM) are available Amritsar to Jammu.

Journey time: 13-15 hours depending upon the transport.

Recommended Way: Deluxe bus from Amritsar to Jammu. Shared Taxi from Jammu to Srinagar.

Manali

Public Bus: There are 2 direct government buses (2:30 PM and 3:55 PM). Travel time 16-18 hours and price ₹600.

Private bus: The Direct private bus leaves at 4:30 pm. Travel time 13-15 hours and price ₹1100.

Recommended Way: Direct Journey can be hard. Making a stopover at Dharamsala/bir on the way makes it easier or going by volvos would be more comfortable.

Manikaran/Kasol

Public Bus: Direct bus at 6 PM to Manikaran/Kasol. ₹600 . 16-18 hours.

Private Bus: Direct bus at 4:30 pm. ₹1100. 13-15 hours.

Recommended Way: Direct Journey can be hard. Making a stopover at Dharamsala/Bir on the way makes it easier or take the volvo.

Chandigarh:

Bus: Private AC buses are available at 6 am and 2-3 pm. Public AC/NON-AC buses available from Amritsar to Chandigarh all day from the bus stand or private transporters near Hall Gate.

Train: Trains leave at 5:15 AM & 5:30 PM.

Journey time: 4 hours on train. 4/5 hours on private/public Buses.

Recommended Way: Book train in advance or take the bus for spontaneous trip.

Shimla

Bus: Direct bus to Shimla at 5:55 AM and 7:53 PM. Alternately, you can take a bus from Amritsar to chandigarh and another one from Chandigarh to Shimla.

Toy Train: Toy train starts from Kalka(about 30 km from chandigarh).Take the bus/train to Chandigarh. Then take the bus to Kalka from Chandigarh and from Kalka take the heritage toy train to Shimla.

Journey time: approximately 10 hours.

Recommended Way: Toy train is a national heritage and an experience to travel with.

Jaipur

Bus: The private bus to Jaipur leaves at 6 PM and reaches Jaipur at 8-9 AM. Easy to book even the same day of travel.Check Yashika Travels near hall gate or ask hostel reception for booking tickets.

Train: There are trains from Amritsar to Jaipur on Tuesday(2:30 pm and 5:50pm), Thursday at 2:30 PM and Friday/Sunday at 5:50 PM.

Journey time: 14-18 hours on train, 15 hours on bus.

Recommended Way: Book train in advance or night bus for spontaneous trip

Bikaner

Train: There are no trains from Amritsar to Bikaner. You can get the train to Bikaner at 1:20 PM daily and also 2:10 AM on Tuesday from Jalandhar (2 hours from Amritsar by bus/train)

Bus: The bus leaves from Amritsar to Bikaner around 9 PM. Check Neelam Travels near Bus Stand or ask hostel reception for booking tickets.

Journey time: 11-12 hours.

Recommended Way: Night bus is the fastest way to reach.

Jodhpur

Train: There are no trains from Amritsar to Jodhpur. You can get the train to Jodhpur at 1:20 PM daily and also 2:10 AM on Tuesday from Jalandhar (2 hours from Amritsar by bus/train)

Bus: No Direct buses from Amritsar to Jodhpur.

Journey time: 16-18 hours total from Amritsar to Jodhpur.

Recommended Way: Take bus to Jalandhar and train to Jodhpur if you want to get there directly.

Jaisalmer

There is no direct train from Amritsar to Jaisalmer. You need to go to Jodhpur/Bikaner and then take the train/bus to Jaisalmer.

Journey time: About 5-7 hours from Bikaner. Total 18-20 hours.

Recommended Way: Night bus from Amritsar to Bikaner. Stay in Bikaner for a day to visit the Rat Temple. Take bus/Train to Jaisalmer next day.

Pushkar:

Train: There are trains from Amritsar to Ajmer (20 kms from Pushkar) on Tuesday(2:30 pm and 5:50pm), Thursday at 2:30 PM and Friday/Sunday at 5:50 PM.

Bus: No direct bus.

Journey time: 19-21 hours on train.

Haridwar/Rishikesh

Train: Trains go from Amritsar to Haridwar. The sleeper is at 10:15 PM; Travel time is 9.5 hours. The seater leaves 6:55 AM; travel time is 7 hours. From Haridwar, a lot of shared taxis/tuktuks go to Rishikesh.

Bus: The direct bus to Haridwar leaves at 5:30 PM.Alternately you can take a bus from Amritsar to Chandigarh then Chandigarh to Rishikesh.

Journey time: 10-14 hours on Bus. 7-10 hours on a Train.

Recommended way: Train is the recommended way of travel on this route.

Agra

Train: There are 3 trains to Agra everyday (5:35 AM, 8:30 AM, 4:15 PM); 4 on Sunday (5:35 AM, 8:30 AM, 4:15 PM, 11:45 PM); 5 on Wednesday/Saturday (5:35 AM, 8:30 AM, 4:15 PM, 11:15 PM, 11:45 PM).

Bus: Take the bus to Delhi and then the bus from Delhi to Agra.

Journey time: 10-16 hours on Train. 13-18 hours on Buses.

Recommended way: Train is the recommended way of travel on this route.

Varanasi

Train: There are 2 trains daily (6:10 PM and 6:45 PM; 3 on Monday, Tuesday and Thursdaay (5:55 AM, 6:10 PM and 6:45 PM); 3 on Wednesday, (12:35 PM, 6:10 PM and 6:45 PM); 5 on Friday (5:55 AM, 12:35 PM, 3:50 PM, 6:10 PM and 6:45 PM). Travel time is 20-25 hours.

Bus: Bus from Amritsar to Delhi and then Delhi to Varanasi.

Journey time: 19-25 hours hours on Train. More than 24 hours on a bus.

Recommended way: Train is the recommended way of travel on this route.

Lahore

Tuktuk: Tuktuk charges ₹500 to drop to the border. You can take transport on the other side to get to the city.
